About Our School

Daniel Carter Beard JHS 189Q is located just outside the culturally rich downtown Flushing in Queens, NY.  Our school reflects the evolving demographics of Queens as a multinational hub. We serve a diverse student body of approximately 650 students.  Our students represent more than sixty cultures and ethnicities.

As a whole school community, we are committed to the belief that Success is the Only Option! for all students.  Our programs prepare students for the academic and creative challenges of high school, college, and career pathways.  We offer standards based core courses, accelerated and Regents level strands, arts and music opportunities that engage students in production and performance, and introduction to instructional technology.

At JHS 189Q, we educate the whole child.  We integrate various social emotional learning models through our School Counseling department.  These models are designed to help individuals and groups of students become healthy decision makers, build character and self-esteem, and develop coping and conflict resolution skills that will support them in their middle school years and beyond.

We offer students after school and Saturday academic support and tutoring programs, prep classes for the Algebra I and Living Environment Regents exams, and host a number of enrichment classes, clubs, and activities through our 21st Century Community Schools Grant.  These include musical theatre, basketball, dance, poetry, anime, and Stop Motion.

All of our school community members are lifelong learners.  We work collaboratively on a weekly basis in grade level and departmental Professional Learning teams to review student data, deepen knowledge and understanding of student developmental needs, and build on and create instructional practices that support the learning of all of our students.

Parents and families are key members of our team at JHS 189Q in their roles on our School Leadership Team and Parent Teacher Association.  Our Parent Coordinator works collaboratively with these groups to provide all parents with workshops that address their needs and the needs of their children.

Our school programs are supported by local elected officials including New York State Senator Toby Stavisky,  Congress member Grace Meng, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, City Councilman Peter Koo, and Assemblyman Ron Kim.
